Circumcision in Boys
Circumcision is a surgery to remove the skin that covers the tip of the penis, called foreskin. The procedure is fairly common for newborn boys or even in late adulthood. The procedure also can be a matter of cultural or ethnic traditions, personal hygiene, or preventive healthcare.
Sometimes there's a medical need for circumcision. For example, the foreskin might be too tight to be pulled back over the tip of the penis the procedure of circumcision also is recommended as a way to lower the risk of bacterial infections.
Circumcision has various health benefits, like;
- Hygiene: It makes it easier to thoroughly wash the penile tip, get rid of bacterial accumulation, foul smell, and smegma (whitish sebaceous secretion).
- Reduce urinary tract infection (UTI) risks.The risk of UTIs in circumcised men is low. However, these infections are more common in uncircumcised men. Serious infections early in life can lead to kidney problems later.
- Reduce sexually transmitted infection risks.Circumcised men have a lower risk of certain sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, the virus causing cervical cancer to female sexual partners, But it's still key to having safe sex, which includes the use of condoms.
- Reduce penile cancer risk.Although cancer of the penis is rare, it's less common in men who have been circumcised. What's more, cervical cancer is less common in the female sexual partners of men who have been circumcised.
- Penile problem prevention.Sometimes, the foreskin on a penis that hasn't been circumcised can be hard or impossible to pull back. This is called phimosis. It can lead to swelling and inflammation, of the foreskin or head of the penis.
There are certain medical reasons for a boy to have a circumcision
It's rare for circumcision to be recommended for medical reasons in boys like;
Phimosis (Tight foreskin)
Where the foreskin is too tight to be pulled back over the head of the penis. This can sometimes cause pain when the penis is erect and, in rare cases, passing urine may be difficult.
Balanitis (penile glans inflammation)
Where the foreskin and head of the penis become inflamed and infected.
Paraphimosis (trapped and tightened foreskin behind the glans)
Where the foreskin cannot be returned to its original position after being pulled back, causing the head of the penis to become swollen and painful, immediate treatment is needed to avoid serious complications, such as restricted blood flow to the penis.
Balanitis xerotica obliterans
It is a dermatological condition involving atrophic white patches, which causes a tight foreskin and, in some cases, also affects the head of the penis, which can become scarred and inflamed.
